To all these people who provided data we extend our sincere thanks and hope that we have adequately acknowledged all their help both in the text and in Appendix 2 of the book. The authors remain responsible for the way these data have been used. A large amount of the formal work on this book was carried out on the principal author's sabbatical from Murdoch University undertaken at the University of Colorado in the Faculty of Architecture and Planning.

Of course, the historical data for the previous three decades are also included, because they are still valuable for time series analyses. In a number of cases they have been corrected for minor arithmetic errors or improved where revised data have been obtained from the cities. In a few cases, completely new data have been added where it was previously unavailable. The present book does however exclude West Berlin and Moscow which were in the original book. West Berlin as a metropolitan area no longer exists and Moscow simply presented an insurmountable data collection problem.

They can of course be quite fluid. Readers will note that there is sometimes some repetition of names within cities of the same region. This is where a single source of data was found, usually at a national level, which could be applied to all the cities in question. Our gratitude for the help provided by all these hundreds of people is enormous and is referred to in more detail at the beginning of the next chapter.
